SMDSA’s main objectives :

	To promote a Trade Association of contractors involved in the collection, transportation and disposal of sanitary medical and clinical waste.
	To monitor the development of procedures and processes relating to sanitary and medical disposal; and to make representations to appropriate regulatory bodies in relation to the enforcement of recommended methods of sanitary and medical disposal.
	To provide insofar as legally permissible a forum for discussion between members regarding sanitary and medical disposal
	To perform the role of media spokesperson for Contractors involved in sanitary and medical disposal.
	To observe and keep members informed of the operations of existing laws and practices relating to sanitary and medical disposal; of the activities of Government committees and other bodies; and of all legislative proposals which may either affect or tend to affect the interests of members.
	To co-operate with any other association or organisation in the world having similar or allied objects.

SMDSA does not prescribe for its members any particular disposal method, believing that such are best determined by specific ecological and economic factors: but it does require its members to pursue the highest standards of safety and care in whatever method they may adopt. It requires assurance of such compliance from any applicant for membership of SMDSA.
