SMDSA doubles Membership in 12 months

Since publication of Issue 3, the number of members joining the The Sanitary Medical Disposal Services Association has doubled. In part this has been due to the SMDSA’s active stance over the Governments’ U-turn on rigid containers which resulted in a flood of calls from non-members wanting advice and information, but increasingly, recognition by each of the various government departments that SMDSA had ‘come of age’ and now carried the voice of the industry, representing 98% of the UK’s clinical waste incineration capacity, over 200 clinical and hygiene waste transfer stations...

No truth in the rumour !

As we approach the end of the five year derogation for the transport of clinical waste, rumours have recently been circulating that a further extension had been agreed. SMDSA’s members and the industry in general have spent millions of pounds in design, development, testing, and purchase/production of containers and vehicles to ensure that full compliance is achieved before the deadline.

The SMDSA have sought clarification from both HSE and DTLR. The following extract from a statement by DTLR was issued at the end of June:

Rexam launches flatpak UN container

DISPOSAflatPAK has been developed by Rexam as a safe cost effective and legal means of collecting and transporting clinical waste by road. DISPOSAflatPAK is presented in space saving flat pack form, is quick and simple to assemble, sequentially numbered and barcoded for delivery and collection trace ability and is used with a purpose designed freestanding/wall mounted stand.
