Grundon Waste Management install Second Hydroclave at Knowl Hill Maidenhead

September 28, 2006

The second Hydroclave arrived at Knowl Hill in March 2006 and after commissioning was validated by the Environment agency to start operations in July. Many improvements have been made to the second unit including modification to the large rotating blade to allow faster unloading, and with the addition of up front shredding, the throughput for the site will be more than doubled whilst dramatically reducing the need for manual handling.

The waste is loaded onto a conveyor belt via a bin tipper where it then is dropped into a hopper containing the first shredder.

Directly under the first shredder is the second shredder, which is slightly offset to achieve a better reduction of material size.

Once the waste leaves the shredder, it is moved through two screw conveyors to a point between the two Hydroclaves.

A third screw conveyor will then move the waste left or right into either No 1 or No 2 machine.

With the first machine running, the operators can then load the second one.

Once the waste has been sterilised, it is moved by conveyor to a compactor unit and then taken on the short trip to the Knowl Hill Landfill, however the residue will shortly go to the new Energy from Waste Facility at Colnbrook as soon as it is ready, thus producing electricity.
