A review of the draft NHS Guidance document “SAFE MANAGEMENT OF HEALTHCARE WASTE”

Known to many as the ‘purple book, guidance on the safe management of healthcare waste was produced by the Health Services Advisory Committee in 1999 - the ‘Safe disposal of clinical waste’. However new legislation, in particular, that arising from EC directives on Landfill and Hazardous waste required major changes.

NHS Estates Revise ‘Safe Disposal of Clinical Waste’

NHS Estates is currently revising the guidance document ‘Safe Disposal of Clinical Waste’ The new guidance document is to be titled ‘The Safe Management of Healthcare Waste’ is be released for consultation in May 2005. SMDSA member Enviros Consulting Ltd have been contracted to compile the new guidance.

HAZARDOUS WASTE COMES OF AGE!

 

In April the long awaited Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005 and The List of Wastes (England) Regulations 2005 were published, having been laid before Parliament in late March to be implemented ahead of the General Election. The equivalent Regulations for Wales have been delayed but, according to DEFRA, will be identical to those in England, with the systems for both England and Wales hopefully running seamlessly.
