Established in 1993 to maintain high standards within the industry, the association is the principal point of contact for providers, consumers and regulators regarding healthcare waste services.
The SMDSA is committed to proactively improving quality and standards by exploring opportunities, whether they are through science, technology, communication or enhanced community engagement, to improve the provision of information, skills and best practice in all aspects of the industry’s operations.
The organisation has signed up to the CIWM Health, Safety and Welfare Pledge, showing its commitment to making a real difference across the industry. It has also signed a memorandum of understanding with CIWM to continue to build upon and enhance the current relationship for consultation and cooperation, and to support and complement each party’s contribution to local environmental quality.
Members of the SMDSA can take advantage of a wide range of benefits including invitations to quarterly meetings to network with likeminded businesses in the sector, access to industry information and resources and the ability to draw upon member knowledge. Importantly, the organisation supports in lobbying the regulator and other bodies, addressing common issues across the sector, and offering access to a wide knowledge base through the SMDSA’s collaboration with other bodies and associations.
The organisation is managed by an executive committee, headed up by Clare Noble. You can find out more about the executive committee members, their backgrounds and expertise here: The executive committee
